Centre vs State Conflict in India: What the Constitution Really Says

India follows a federal structure where powers are divided between the Centre and the States through the 7th Schedule of the Constitution. However, frequent political and administrative clashes arise over control, policies, and institutions. Articles 246 and 254 define legislative boundaries and dispute resolutions, especially when both the Centre and State legislate on concurrent subjects.

Recent examples—ranging from CBI investigations to GST compensation and Governor interference—have sparked debates over misuse of constitutional provisions. Experts argue that while India is quasi-federal, true democracy thrives only through cooperative federalism, where both governments respect each other's jurisdiction. Ensuring balance is crucial for a united yet diverse nation like India.
