The courts emphasized that only documents recognized under the Citizenship Act, 1955—such as an Indian passport, birth certificate, or a citizenship/naturalisation certificate—serve as conclusive evidence of nationality. This clarification comes amid electoral roll revisions and legal cases where possession of common ID cards was mistakenly assumed to prove citizenship. Authorities have urged citizens to ensure they have the proper documentation when required for legal, electoral, or administrative verification.
