Senior Congress leader and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor has stated that China’s communication with Pakistan could play a vital role in easing the current tensions between India and Pakistan, especially after recent escalations along the border.

In an interview, Tharoor emphasized the importance of third-party diplomatic influence, pointing out that Pakistan is more likely to heed advice from countries it views as allies.

“If China sends a clear message to Pakistan against sponsoring or tolerating cross-border terrorism, it could significantly help de-escalate the situation,” said Tharoor.

Tharoor, who also served as a former Minister of State for External Affairs, reiterated that India is not interested in conflict, but will not hesitate to defend its borders if provoked.

“India has no desire for war. But if our sovereignty is threatened, we have every right to respond with strength,” he said.

Calling for a more active global role in South Asia, Tharoor said major powers including the United States, China, and the UN should push for peace and stability in the region.

“South Asia cannot afford another full-blown crisis. Everyone—especially influential partners like China—must act responsibly.”
