Tamil Nadu health officials have issued a precautionary advisory urging residents to avoid consuming undercooked chicken and eggs following the discovery of dead crows in certain parts of the state. The warning comes amid concerns over the potential spread of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, which can affect both birds and, in rare cases, humans.
Authorities confirmed that samples from the deceased birds have been sent for laboratory testing to determine whether avian influenza is present. While investigations are ongoing, health and veterinary departments have stepped up surveillance measures to prevent any possible outbreak and ensure public safety.
Bird flu primarily spreads among birds, particularly poultry and wild birds such as crows. Humans can become infected through close contact with infected birds, contaminated surfaces, or by consuming raw or undercooked poultry products. As a preventive measure, officials have emphasized the importance of thoroughly cooking chicken and eggs before consumption. Proper cooking at high temperatures effectively kills the virus, significantly reducing the risk of transmission.
The state health department has reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for panic. However, as a precaution, residents are advised to follow strict food safety and hygiene practices. These include washing hands thoroughly after handling raw poultry, avoiding cross-contamination in kitchens, and ensuring that eggs are fully cooked before eating. Street vendors and restaurants have also been instructed to adhere to food safety standards.
In addition to food-related precautions, local authorities have intensified monitoring of poultry farms and bird populations in affected areas. Veterinary teams are conducting inspections, and necessary containment measures will be implemented if laboratory tests confirm the presence of the virus. Public awareness campaigns are also being rolled out to educate citizens about preventive steps.
Health experts have highlighted that properly cooked poultry products remain safe for consumption. The advisory specifically targets undercooked or raw preparations, which may pose a risk if the virus is present. Consumers are encouraged to purchase poultry products from authorized and hygienic sources to minimize exposure to potential contamination.
The discovery of dead crows has triggered a coordinated response involving health, animal husbandry, and municipal authorities. Surveillance teams are actively collecting samples and sanitizing affected locations to prevent further spread. Officials have also urged citizens to report any unusual bird deaths to local authorities for prompt investigation.
Avian influenza outbreaks are periodically reported in various regions, and timely preventive measures play a critical role in containing the spread. Tamil Nadu’s proactive advisory reflects the state’s effort to safeguard public health while maintaining transparency during the monitoring process.
As laboratory results are awaited, authorities continue to stress caution without causing alarm. Residents are advised to stay informed through official updates and avoid misinformation. By following recommended safety measures, the risk of infection can be effectively minimized, ensuring both public health and food safety across the state.
