Taliban Confirms Retaliatory Border Strikes on Pakistan After Airspace Violation

Afghanistan’s Taliban government has officially confirmed retaliatory attacks on Pakistani border posts, citing repeated airspace violations and alleged Pakistani strikes against Afghan territory. These cross-border tensions mark another escalation in the volatile security dynamics between the two nations.

According to Afghan state media, the Taliban’s defense ministry described the operations as a “revenge operation” triggered by what it calls Pakistan’s infringement of its sovereignty. The strikes reportedly targeted several Pakistani military posts near the Helmand-Afghanistan border. While Afghanistan claims casualties on the Pakistani side, including the capture of some outposts, Islamabad has neither confirmed those losses nor accepted direct responsibility for the initial air violations.

The clashes are not isolated incidents. They follow a pattern of mutual accusations: Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of being a safe haven for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group responsible for periodic militant attacks inside Pakistan. The Taliban government denies harboring militants. On the other hand, Kabul claims that Pakistani strikes have killed civilians at markets and residential areas inside Afghanistan.

These confrontations have unfolded along multiple provinces bordering Pakistan — including Helmand, Paktika, Kunar, Nangarhar, and Khost. Afghan officials say the retaliatory operations successfully struck various points “beyond the hypothetical line,” a phrase used by the Afghan leadership to refer to disputed border areas associated with the Durand Line.

Pakistan, meanwhile, condemns the attacks and warns that it will respond to defend its territory. The Torkham border crossing has been reported closed in certain instances due to heightened military activity.

The ongoing border clashes reflect deeper, long-standing tensions rooted in historical border disputes, militant insurgencies, and differing interpretations of sovereignty. As both sides dig in, analysts caution that without diplomatic engagement, escalation risks rising civilian harm and further instability in the frontier regions.
