Over 7.6 Lakh Indian Students Went Abroad for Higher Studies in 2024: Govt Report

The number of Indian students going abroad for higher education has been steadily increasing. According to government data, while 2.6 lakh students went abroad in 2020, the number rose to 4.45 lakh in 2021. In 2022, this figure reached 7.52 lakh and touched a record high of nearly 8.95 lakh in 2023. However, in 2024, a slight decline was recorded, with over 7.6 lakh students going abroad.

Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar shared this information in the Lok Sabha during the Question Hour. He clarified that the Ministry of Education does not maintain direct records of students going overseas, but data provided by the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) confirms this trend. Compared to 2023, a marginal drop was observed in the number of students in 2024.
