The Indian Express+1 This brings the updated total number of MBBS seats in India to approximately 1,26,600 (excluding AIIMS and JIPMER allocations).
Key Highlights & Changes
Earlier revisions had already added ~6,850 seats, but also saw over 1,056 seats removed due to pending court cases and regulatory constraints.
In the latest revision, while 7,375 seats were newly sanctioned, 456 seats had to be cut back owing to renewal or legal delays.
Among states, expansions have occurred in Andhra Pradesh (e.g., Santhiram Medical College increased intake from 150 → 250), Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
However, some institutions also faced reductions. For example, Delhi’s Hamdard Institute saw removal of 150 seats in the updated matrix.

Implications for Aspirants & Counselling
The increased seat pool offers more opportunities and may ease competition slightly, especially in states with large increments.
Students must carefully check the latest seat matrix before choice filling in NEET UG counselling rounds, as allocations may shift.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) must integrate these changes into its ongoing rounds of choice filling and allotment.
Delays or legal holds in seat renewal remain a risk, so further revisions may still occur.
