KMC Launches Tree Ambulance to Protect and Treat Urban Greenery

KMC Launches Tree Ambulance to Protect and Treat Urban Greenery

In a unique step towards strengthening urban environmental protection, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has launched a “tree ambulance” to provide emergency care and treatment for trees across the city. The initiative has been introduced using MLA funds of Debasish Kumar, who is also a mayoral council member of KMC in charge of parks and squares, highlighting the city’s growing focus on preserving and maintaining its green cover.

The specially designed tree ambulance has been manufactured at a cost of Rs 12.5 lakh and will be used to offer free services in public places. The vehicle is equipped to address various issues affecting trees, including pest infestations, fungal infections, physical damage, and structural weaknesses. Officials say the aim is to respond quickly to complaints and prevent long-term damage that could otherwise lead to tree loss or safety hazards.

Urban trees often suffer due to pollution, soil compaction, illegal construction, cable installations, and extreme weather events. Despite their importance in regulating temperature, improving air quality, and enhancing biodiversity, trees in cities rarely receive timely medical attention. The introduction of a tree ambulance is intended to bridge this gap by bringing expert care directly to affected sites.

According to KMC officials, the ambulance will be deployed based on reports from residents, ward offices, and field staff. A trained team, including horticulture and forestry personnel, will assess the condition of trees and provide on-the-spot treatment wherever possible. In cases where long-term care is required, follow-up visits and monitoring will be conducted to ensure recovery.

Debasish Kumar said the initiative reflects a commitment to treat trees as living assets rather than expendable infrastructure. By allocating MLA funds to this project, the focus has been placed on sustainable urban development and ecological responsibility. He also noted that healthy trees play a critical role in mitigating the effects of climate change, particularly in densely populated cities like Kolkata.

Environmentalists have welcomed the move, calling it an innovative and much-needed intervention. They point out that while tree plantation drives are common, maintenance and protection of existing trees often receive less attention. A mobile tree-care unit, they argue, can significantly improve survival rates and overall urban tree health.

The tree ambulance will initially operate across key public spaces, roadsides, and parks, with plans to expand its reach based on demand and effectiveness. KMC is also considering awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to report damaged or diseased trees promptly.

With this initiative, Kolkata joins a small but growing list of cities experimenting with specialised environmental services to protect urban ecosystems. The launch of the tree ambulance signals a shift from reactive tree removal to proactive tree care, reinforcing the idea that urban development and environmental conservation can—and must—go hand in hand.

By offering free services and rapid response, the KMC’s tree ambulance is expected to become a vital tool in safeguarding Kolkata’s green heritage for future generations.
