In a major step toward digital self-reliance, the Government of India has fully migrated around 12 lakh (1.2 million) email accounts belonging to central government employees — including those in the Prime Minister’s Office — from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) infrastructure to the domestic platform Zoho.
Despite retaining the existing email domains such as gov.in and nic.in, the hosting, data processing, and back-end operations are now handled on Zoho’s servers.
The move, which was contracted under a seven-year deal awarded in 2023, is aimed at strengthening data security, promoting indigenous software, reducing reliance on foreign systems, and aligning with India’s vision of transforming from a service economy into a product-nationTechnical audits by NIC, CERT-In, and SQS have been carried out to ensure the platform meets stringent security standards.
