How Indore Schools Carry Forward Gandhi’s Vision of Swachhta

How Indore Schools Carry Forward Gandhi’s Vision of Swachhta

Indore, India’s cleanest city for several years, is also setting an example in its schools by carrying forward Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of swachhta (cleanliness). Educational institutions across the city are engaging students in cleanliness drives, waste segregation, “no-litter” campaigns, and awareness rallies. Many schools have introduced water conservation projects such as rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, sewage treatment plants, and solar energy adoption, helping students understand sustainability as part of cleanliness.

Student committees and “Swachhata Attendance” campaigns ensure that children build daily hygiene habits like hand-washing, keeping classrooms clean, and using dustbins. Creative initiatives — including poster making, best-out-of-waste competitions, and street plays — make cleanliness a part of everyday learning.

By combining infrastructure improvements with moral education, Indore’s schools are instilling in young minds Gandhi’s belief that “cleanliness is next to godliness.” While challenges remain in some government schools, especially regarding sanitation facilities, the overall effort reflects a strong civic culture where children learn to value hygiene, sustainability, and responsibility — carrying Gandhi’s vision of a clean and dignified India into the future.
