Amazon’s Cloud Unit Reports Fire After Objects Hit UAE Data Center as Regional Conflict Intensifies
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Amazon Web Services reported a fire and temporary shutdown at one of its major data center facilities in the UAE after unidentified “objects” struck the site, igniting sparks and flames amid escalating regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.
The incident occurred in the UAE’s ME-CENTRAL-1 Region, specifically affecting Availability Zone mec1-az2, where impacts caused a fire that prompted firefighters to cut power to the facility and its backup generators to bring the blaze under control. AWS said the outage will take several hours to resolve, although other availability zones in the UAE region remain operational.
Incident Amid Iran’s Retaliatory Strikes
The fire and cloud service disruption come at a tense moment, as Iran has launched waves of missile and drone attacks across the Gulf in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iranian military infrastructure. These strikes have targeted airports, ports, residential areas and other infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates and neighboring countries.
Although AWS declined to confirm or deny a direct connection between the objects that struck the data center and the Iranian strikes, the timing of the fire — shortly after major regional attacks — has raised concerns about physical impacts from falling debris or missile/drone fragments hitting critical digital infrastructure.
Cloud Outages and Wider Tech Disruption
Beyond the UAE facility, AWS has reported power and connectivity issues at its Bahrain data centers as well, indicating broader infrastructure disruptions across the Gulf region amid the conflict.
The affected services include key cloud platforms such as computing and database systems hosted in the impacted availability zone. AWS advised customers to reroute workloads to other regions or availability zones where possible while restoration efforts continue.
Tech companies and multinational firms in the UAE and broader Gulf have begun restricting travel and adjusting operations amid the instability, with some shifting workloads to regions outside the conflict zone.
Strategic and Economic Implications
The reported incident marks a rare case of a major commercial cloud provider’s infrastructure being physically struck during a wartime escalation, highlighting the vulnerability of even high-security digital assets in active conflict zones. Analysts note that data centers, like critical energy and transport infrastructure, are increasingly at risk when regional hostilities intensify.
The UAE has traditionally marketed itself as a stable business and technology hub in the Middle East, but recent Iranian strikes have hit airports, landmarks and other infrastructure, raising concerns about investor confidence and operational continuity for global firms.
What AWS Says
AWS confirmed that the fire began after unidentified objects struck the data center at around 4:30 AM Pacific Standard Time, causing sparks and a blaze that local crews extinguished before shutting down the facility’s power as a safety precaution. The company emphasized that other zones in the region were operational and that a full restoration could take multiple hours.
When asked directly about a link to the regional strikes, AWS declined to confirm or deny any connection between the fire and the broader military actions unfolding across the Gulf.
Key Developments:
AWS UAE data center hit by unidentified objects, causing fire and power shutdown.
Outages and connectivity issues also reported in nearby Bahrain data centers.
Incident occurred during ongoing regional conflict following Iranian missile and drone strikes.
