Apple is making a bold move into generative AI with the development of a ChatGPT-style Answer Engine, spearheaded by a new internal unit named Answers, Knowledge, and Information (AKI). Unlike traditional search tools, this AI engine will provide synthesized answers by crawling the web and leveraging contextual awareness across Apple services like Siri, Safari, Spotlight, and possibly even within Mail or Calendar. The initiative, led by former Siri executive Robby Walker, reflects Apple’s frustration with earlier AI missteps and a desire to catch up with rivals like Google and OpenAI.
Currently in its early stages, the project is expected to see limited public testing by 2026, with a broader rollout anticipated in 2027. Apple is actively hiring engineers with expertise in search algorithms, machine learning, and ranking systems. With a focus on on-device privacy, tight ecosystem integration, and a massive user base, Apple’s Answer Engine could redefine AI-powered search and position the company as a serious contender in the generative AI space.
