The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced a landmark move to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the school curriculum for students from Class 3 onwards starting in the 2026-27 academic session. This initiative is aimed at giving children a strong foundation in AI concepts and preparing them for a rapidly evolving digital world.
Under this initiative, AI will be taught as a foundational skill, similar to subjects like mathematics and language, ensuring that students develop computational thinking, problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of AI applications from an early age. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and other educational boards are working on a structured framework to integrate AI learning into existing curricula.
To support this transition, over one crore teachers across the country will undergo specialized training to deliver AI education effectively. Pilot programs have already started in several schools, helping teachers use AI tools for lesson planning and interactive learning. Currently, AI is offered as a skill subject from Class 6 onwards in over 18,000 CBSE schools, with optional courses available for Classes 9–12.
This move aligns with India’s broader vision of future-ready education, ensuring students gain hands-on experience in emerging technologies while nurturing curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. By learning AI from an early age, students will be better equipped to navigate careers in technology, data science, robotics, and other digital fields.
The MoE’s initiative marks a significant step towards integrating modern technology into mainstream education, fostering innovation, and preparing the next generation for a tech-driven future.
