UK and India Must Shape AI Together, Says Kanishka Narayan
London/New Delhi: Calling for stronger technological collaboration, UK MP Kanishka Narayan has said that the United Kingdom and India must work together to shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting the shared democratic values and innovation strengths of both nations.
Speaking about the growing global influence of AI, Narayan emphasized that emerging technologies should not be shaped by a handful of countries alone. Instead, he argued that trusted democracies like the UK and India have both the responsibility and the capability to co-lead in setting global AI standards, regulations, and ethical frameworks.
Strategic AI Partnership Between UK and India
Narayan noted that the UK’s advanced research ecosystem and India’s rapidly expanding digital economy create a powerful synergy. With India emerging as one of the world’s largest technology hubs and the UK positioning itself as a global AI leader, deeper collaboration could accelerate innovation while ensuring responsible governance.
He stressed that cooperation should extend beyond policy discussions to include:
Joint AI research initiatives
Talent exchange programmes
Startup ecosystem partnerships
Shared regulatory frameworks
Ethical AI development models
According to Narayan, aligning AI strategies could help both countries remain competitive amid increasing technological competition worldwide.
AI, Democracy and Global Standards
The British MP also underlined the importance of democratic nations shaping AI governance, particularly around issues such as data privacy, algorithmic transparency, misinformation, and national security. He suggested that without coordinated efforts, AI regulation could become fragmented, potentially slowing innovation or creating conflicting standards.
The UK has been actively promoting AI safety discussions on the global stage, while India has been expanding its digital public infrastructure and AI adoption across governance, healthcare, and fintech sectors. Narayan said a coordinated approach would allow both countries to contribute meaningfully to global rule-making in AI.
Growing Tech Ties Between the Two Nations
Technology has become a key pillar of the broader UK-India strategic partnership. Bilateral trade agreements, research collaborations, and academic exchanges have already strengthened ties, and AI is now emerging as a central focus area.
Narayan’s remarks reflect increasing recognition that AI will significantly influence economic growth, job markets, defence systems, and public services. By working together, he suggested, the UK and India can ensure that innovation remains inclusive, ethical, and globally competitive.
Looking Ahead
As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries worldwide, policymakers across democracies are debating how best to regulate and promote its development. Narayan’s call for a joint UK-India approach signals a push for stronger transnational cooperation in shaping one of the most powerful technologies of the 21st century.
With AI rapidly advancing, collaboration between major democratic economies may prove crucial in defining how the technology evolves — and who gets to set the rules.
