PM Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai Airport, Flags Off Metro-3 Final Phase & Launches “Mumbai One”

On October 8, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated multiple landmark infrastructure projects in Mumbai, ushering in a new era of connectivity and urban mobility for India’s financial capital.

Key Highlights

Navi Mumbai International Airport (Phase 1)
PM Modi officially inaugurated Phase-1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, giving Mumbai its much-anticipated second international gateway.

While the airport is inaugurated, commercial flight operations are expected to begin by December 2025.

The new airport is intended to ease pressure on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and to expand air connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Notably, it is being designed as a multimodal hub, integrating road, metro, suburban rail, and even water taxi links.

Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line) – Final Phase
The Prime Minister also flagged off the final 10.99-km stretch (Phase 2B) of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, connecting Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade.

With this inauguration, the entire 33.5 km stretch of Metro-3 becomes fully operational.

The project cost for the final phase alone is estimated at ₹12,200 crore.

This metro corridor is Mumbai’s first fully underground line with 27 stations, and will connect multiple commercial, residential, and transit hubs across the city.

Starting October 9, commuter service on the full route is expected to begin.

“Mumbai One” App Launch
Alongside the physical infrastructure inaugurations, Modi launched the “Mumbai One” app — an integrated mobility platform that will unite 11 transport services in Mumbai under one digital interface.

The app allows for digital ticketing, multimodal trip planning, and cashless payments across metro lines, suburban trains, buses, and other transit modes.

This initiative aims to simplify commuting and bolster the effectiveness of public transport across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

✍️ Substantial Impact & Significance

Connectivity & Decongestion: The new airport and fully operational underground metro are poised to significantly reduce congestion on roads and existing transport systems, while improving access between Mumbai’s suburbs, business districts, and the upcoming airport.

Economic & Regional Growth: These projects are expected to stimulate economic activity in Navi Mumbai and surrounding zones, boosting real estate prospects, industrial growth, and job creation.

Seamless Urban Mobility: The “Mumbai One” app reflects a shift toward integrated transport solutions, making public transit more user-friendly and efficient for daily commuters.

Symbolic Momentum: The synchronized launch of air, metro, and digital infrastructure underlines the government’s push for modern infrastructure-led development, particularly in mega-cities.
