OpenAI has expressed interest in acquiring Google's Chrome browser if antitrust regulators compel its sale. Nick Turley, OpenAI's Head of Product for ChatGPT, testified during the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust trial against Google that the company would consider purchasing Chrome if it were to be divested. Turley emphasized that such a move would enhance ChatGPT's distribution and user experience by integrating it directly into a widely used browser
This interest follows a previous attempt by OpenAI to partner with Google for integrating its search capabilities into ChatGPT. OpenAI reached out to Google in July 2024, but the proposal was declined in August, with Google citing concerns about involving too many competitors . Currently, ChatGPT utilizes Bing's search technology, though Turley noted significant quality issues with this provider. OpenAI is also working on developing its own search index, although progress has been slower than expected .
The Department of Justice's antitrust case against Google includes a proposal to force the company to sell Chrome to restore competition in the online search and advertising markets. Chrome holds a significant share of the U.S. browser market, and its divestiture could have substantial implications for the tech industry
