Jaipur Municipal Corporation–Greater Rolls Out Major Urban Projects: Metro, Sports, and Civic Reforms

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation–Greater (JMC-G) has recently initiated several significant developments aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure and governance:

🏗️ Launch of New Sports Academy

Under the 'Swasth Jaipur' initiative, a new sports academy has been inaugurated near Ravindra Manch. This facility offers amenities for badminton, tennis, basketball, cricket, and volleyball. The inauguration was attended by Jaipur MP Manju Sharma and MLA Kalicharan Saraf. However, concerns have been raised regarding infrastructure quality, especially following the recent closure of the Triveni Pulia sports complex due to maintenance issues.

🏙️ Merger of Civic Bodies and Boundary Expansion

In a move to streamline governance, the Rajasthan government has approved the merger of Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation and Jaipur Municipal Corporation Heritage into a single unified entity. This restructuring reduces the total number of wards from 250 to 150 and brings 78 new villages under the municipal jurisdiction. The merger aims to enhance administrative efficiency and urban development.

🏛️ Controversy Over Historic Football Ground

A 136-year-old football ground in Ramniwas Bagh, historically linked to the royal lineage of Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, is at the center of a development dispute. Initially handed over to the Jaipur Development Authority for an underground parking project, the land has not been returned post-completion. Now, JMC-G proposes to develop a multi-sports complex on the site, leading to opposition from the Union Football Club, which is considering legal action

🚇 Approval of Jaipur Metro Phase-2

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has approved the Detailed Project Report for Jaipur Metro Phase-2. The 42.8 km corridor will stretch from Todi Mod to Prahladpura, featuring 36 stations. The project, estimated at Rs 12,260 crore, aims to bolster public transit by connecting major residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Construction is expected to commence between August and October 2025, pending central approval.

These initiatives reflect JMC-G's commitment to urban development and improved civic amenities. However, challenges related to infrastructure quality and heritage conservation highlight the need for careful planning and execution.
