Italians Stage General Strike in Solidarity with Gaza After Aid Flotilla Intercepted

In late September and early October 2025, Italy witnessed large-scale general strikes and demonstrations organized by major unions including CGIL and grassroots union USB in opposition to Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud flotilla. The protests—held in over 100 cities—disrupted rail transport, ports, schools, and other public services. Participants demanded that the Italian government break trade and military cooperation with Israel, increase humanitarian aid, recognize the State of Palestine, and uphold principles of international law. The government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has criticized the strikes as politically driven, while union leaders argue the actions respond to grave humanitarian concerns. The events mark one of the most visible displays of public dissent in Italy over the Gaza conflict.
