Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has asserted that the strength of India-Russia relations is not dependent on New Delhi’s ties with the United States. Speaking at a press briefing, Lavrov emphasized that Moscow values its long-standing strategic partnership with India and sees no conflict in New Delhi expanding relations with other global powers, including Washington.
Lavrov stated, “India-U.S. relations are not and will not be a criterion for the state of our partnership with New Delhi. India is a sovereign nation with its own independent foreign policy, and we fully respect that.”
🪖 Historic Ties at the Core
The minister highlighted the deep-rooted history of India-Russia cooperation, particularly in defense, energy, and space. From Cold War days to the present, Moscow has been one of India’s most consistent partners, providing military hardware, nuclear energy support, and backing in multilateral forums.
Lavrov reiterated that this legacy continues to form the backbone of the relationship. Despite global geopolitical shifts, Russia considers India a “time-tested and trusted friend.”
🌍 India’s Balancing Act
New Delhi has maintained a careful balance in its foreign policy — engaging with the U.S. for trade, technology, and defense collaborations, while preserving its strategic partnership with Russia.
With the U.S., India has strengthened ties through the Quad alliance, defense pacts, and growing economic cooperation.
With Russia, India continues to rely heavily on defense imports, joint military exercises, and energy projects.
Analysts say Lavrov’s remarks reflect Moscow’s recognition of India’s role as a key player in a multipolar world that does not wish to be tied down by exclusive alliances.

📌 Geopolitical Context
The statement comes at a time when global attention is on shifting alliances amid tensions involving the U.S., Russia, and China. India’s neutral stance on several international conflicts has allowed it to maintain partnerships across competing blocs.
By publicly affirming that U.S.-India ties are not a factor in Moscow’s approach, Lavrov has sent a signal that Russia is determined to safeguard its relationship with New Delhi, irrespective of Washington’s influence.
🕯️ Final Word
Sergey Lavrov’s message underlines Russia’s respect for India’s independent foreign policy. As India deepens engagements with both Washington and Moscow, its ability to balance great power rivalries will remain central to its global standing.
For now, the assurance from Moscow is clear: Delhi-Moscow relations stand on their own, not measured against India’s ties with the U.S.
