India’s AI Hardware Push Gets Stronger as New AI-Grade SSD Manufacturing Takes Shape

India’s technology sector is moving beyond software and services, with companies increasingly focusing on the hardware infrastructure required to power artificial intelligence. A fresh development from Kerala is highlighting this shift, as SFO Technologies and Smart IOPS are working on AI-grade solid-state drives (SSDs) in Kochi.

The development is significant because the rapid growth of artificial intelligence is creating demand not only for powerful processors and GPUs but also for high-performance storage systems. AI applications process enormous amounts of data, meaning fast and reliable storage has become an increasingly important part of modern computing infrastructure.

AI-grade SSDs can play an important role in data centers and other computing environments where large amounts of information need to be accessed quickly. As companies train and operate increasingly sophisticated AI systems, the demand for high-speed storage is expected to remain strong.

The Kochi development also reflects a broader change taking place in India’s technology industry. For years, India was internationally known primarily for software services and IT talent. The country is now attempting to build a stronger position in electronics, semiconductor design, advanced manufacturing and other areas of the technology supply chain.

India’s semiconductor ambitions have received significant policy support in recent years. The India Semiconductor Mission has been created to encourage semiconductor fabrication, design and manufacturing, while multiple projects have been approved as the country attempts to establish a stronger domestic ecosystem.

The AI boom is giving this effort an additional push. Modern AI systems require enormous computing resources, including GPUs, specialized processors, networking equipment and high-speed storage. This means that companies producing components around the AI ecosystem could see new opportunities as demand increases.

The technology shift is also visible in India’s startup ecosystem. AI-focused companies are attracting investment and building products for industries ranging from healthcare and finance to software development and enterprise automation. Inc42’s latest coverage, for example, shows continued activity around AI startups and enterprise AI spending in India.

At the global level, the AI infrastructure race is moving extremely quickly. AI coding has increased the amount of software being produced, creating another challenge: testing and validating that software. A US AI code-testing startup, Blacksmith, has reportedly seen its valuation rise to $550 million as demand for software validation grows alongside AI-assisted development.

For India, the opportunity goes beyond simply using AI applications developed elsewhere. The bigger goal is to participate in the infrastructure and technology stack behind AI itself.

That includes semiconductor design, memory and storage, data centers, networking equipment, cloud infrastructure and AI software. Building capabilities across these areas could help India capture a larger share of the global technology economy.

The country is also looking at international cooperation. A parliamentary committee recently recommended deeper India-US collaboration in artificial intelligence, quantum technology and semiconductors, arguing that cooperation in these emerging technologies could support economic growth and strengthen strategic capabilities.

The challenge, however, will be scaling these technologies commercially. Building advanced hardware requires significant investment, specialized talent, reliable supply chains and access to global markets. Indian companies will therefore have to compete with established technology manufacturers from countries that already have mature semiconductor and electronics ecosystems.

Still, the direction is clear. India’s technology story is gradually expanding from software development to hardware, AI infrastructure and deep technology.

If the country can successfully develop a strong ecosystem around AI chips, storage, electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, India could become not just a major consumer of artificial intelligence but also an important producer of the infrastructure that powers it.
