India Continues Russian Oil Imports Despite U.S. Pressure and Trump’s Remarks

In 2025, Indian oil refiners are continuing their strategic crude oil imports from Russia, defying pressure from the United States and recent comments by former President Donald Trump.

While state-owned firms like IOCL and BPCL have temporarily paused spot purchases due to reduced price margins and fear of sanctions, private players such as Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy remain active importers under existing contracts. Experts argue that halting Russian imports entirely could spike global oil prices beyond $80 per barrel and destabilize the energy market. India maintains that its procurement decisions are driven by national interest, energy affordability, and global supply security, emphasizing its need for diversified sources and economic stability. The U.S. warnings, though loud, appear unlikely to alter India's oil strategy in the short term.
