Game Over for Real-Money Gaming: Lok Sabha Passes Online Gaming Bill 2025
New Delhi, August 20, 2025 — The Lok Sabha has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, marking a turning point in India’s digital entertainment sector. The bill imposes a complete ban on real-money online games and betting apps, citing rising concerns over addiction, financial ruin, and suicides linked to gambling-style platforms.
Under the new law, any online game involving monetary stakes will be prohibited. Companies will no longer be able to market or disguise real-money apps as “skill-based” games to escape regulation. Violations could lead to heavy fines and jail terms.
At the same time, the bill seeks to promote e-sports, educational, and social gaming as safe and constructive alternatives. A National Online Gaming Commission will oversee licensing, compliance, and enforcement.
The government argued the move was essential to protect youth and families from the devastating effects of online gambling. “We cannot allow profit-driven platforms to push citizens, especially young people, towards debt and despair,” a minister said during the debate.
The industry, however, is bracing for massive disruption. Shares of gaming-linked companies have already plunged, while associations warn of job losses and a ₹20,000 crore tax revenue hit. Yet, e-sports players and communities have welcomed the legislation, calling it a “new era” for competitive gaming in India.

With the bill now cleared by the Lok Sabha, it awaits passage in the Rajya Sabha and Presidential assent to become law. If enacted, this will effectively mark the end of real-money gaming in India — and the beginning of a regulated e-sports-driven future.
