242 ‘Illegal Betting and Gambling’ Websites Blocked in Major Crackdown

In a significant move to curb illegal online activities, Indian authorities have blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling websites, intensifying efforts to regulate the rapidly evolving digital gaming and wagering space. The crackdown comes months after much of the real money gaming (RMG) industry scaled down or suspended operations, creating a vacuum that was quickly filled by illegal and offshore betting operators.
According to officials, many of these banned platforms were operating without valid licenses and were targeting Indian users through misleading advertisements, social media promotions, and mirror websites. These operators often shift their URLs and domain names frequently to evade detection, making enforcement a complex and ongoing challenge for regulatory agencies.
The blocking of these websites is part of a broader strategy to protect consumers from financial fraud, data theft, and unregulated gambling practices. Unlike licensed or regulated gaming platforms, illegal betting sites typically lack transparency, responsible gaming safeguards, and dispute resolution mechanisms. Users engaging with such platforms face significant risks, including loss of money, misuse of personal data, and exposure to criminal networks.
Officials noted that the situation worsened after stricter tax rules and regulatory uncertainty led many legitimate real money gaming companies to either shut down or significantly reduce their operations. This gap was quickly exploited by offshore gambling platforms, many of which operate from jurisdictions with lax regulations and continue to target Indian audiences despite being illegal under Indian law.
The government has been working closely with internet service providers (ISPs), financial institutions, and law enforcement agencies to identify and block these platforms. In addition to website bans, authorities are also monitoring payment gateways and digital wallets to prevent illegal transactions linked to betting and gambling activities.
Experts believe that while blocking 242 websites is a strong step, it is not a permanent solution. Illegal operators are highly adaptive and often reappear under new names or domains within days. This has sparked renewed calls for a clear and comprehensive regulatory framework for online gaming and betting in India, one that balances consumer protection with industry growth.
The move sends a clear signal that authorities are stepping up surveillance and enforcement against illegal digital gambling. Users are being urged to stay cautious, verify the legality of platforms, and avoid engaging with websites that promise unrealistic returns or operate outside India’s regulatory framework.
As the digital gaming landscape continues to evolve, sustained enforcement, public awareness, and regulatory clarity will be crucial in preventing illegal betting networks from thriving and safeguarding Indian users from financial and legal risks.
